Elsewhere on this site you can read about betting on pony races, which often take place during point-to-point meetings. The interesting thing about it is that the competitors are all young, under the age of 18, yet you are still allowed to bet as much money as you’d like to on the outcome of the events that they take part in.

The natural question to ask then becomes about whether or not you’re allowed to place wagers on point-to-point racing, with the answer, somewhat unsurprisingly, being that yes, it is possible to bet on point-to-point races in certain circumstances.

Point-to-point racing is a form of amateur horse racing that takes place primarily in the United Kingdom and Ireland. These races are typically held in rural areas, often on grass tracks and involve amateur riders and horses.  Although, many larger courses host point-t0-point races, even Cheltenham does during Race Night in May each year.

While point-to-point races are not as widely covered by bookmakers compared to professional horse racing events, there are still opportunities to place bets on these races. Some bookmakers, both online and offline, may offer betting markets for selected point-to-point races, allowing individuals to wager on the outcome of the race or other specific aspects.

What Is Point-To-Point Racing?

Point-to-point racing is a form of amateur horse racing that is a traditional and grassroots style of racing that originated as a way for hunting enthusiasts to test their horses and riders over natural obstacles in a competitive setting. Unlike professional horse racing, which is regulated and organised by official governing bodies, point-to-point racing is usually organised by local hunt clubs or committees.

The races are typically held in rural areas, often on privately owned land or racecourses specifically designed for point-to-point events. Point-to-point races are run over a distance of around 3 to 4 miles and the tracks are usually on grass. The courses are designed to simulate the natural terrain and include various obstacles such as hedges, fences, ditches and water jumps. The challenging nature of the courses requires horses and riders to possess good jumping ability and stamina. In that sense, they are similar in nature to steeplechases.

One notable feature of point-to-point racing is the participation of amateur riders. Unlike professional horse racing, where jockeys are licensed and often make a living from riding, point-to-point races allow amateur riders to compete. These riders are typically local enthusiasts who own and train their horses and they often have a strong connection to the hunting community.

Point-to-point racing is considered a stepping stone for young horses and riders to gain experience before potentially progressing to professional racing. It provides an opportunity for horses to develop their jumping skills and for riders to improve their horsemanship in a competitive environment.

Betting On Point-To-Point Events

In addition to the racing itself, these events may include social activities, food stalls and other entertainment. While point-to-point racing is primarily a recreational and amateur pursuit, it still attracts a dedicated following and provides an enjoyable and competitive outlet for both participants and spectators. It celebrates the spirit of horsemanship, the connection with nature and the heritage of hunting traditions.

These factors don’t deter the bookmakers from offering markets on what is going to happen during the day’s racing. It isn’t just the outcome of the winning horse that you can bet on, with wagers on the likes of the winning jockey or even betting on place finishes also entirely possible.
It’s important to note that the availability of betting markets for point-to-point races can vary. Some bookmakers may focus primarily on professional horse racing events, whilst others may offer limited coverage of point-to-point races depending on what their expertise is.

Additionally, the range of betting options and the level of market depth for point-to-point races may be more limited compared to mainstream racing events. If you are interested in betting on point-to-point races, it is recommended to check with bookmakers or online betting platforms to see if they offer markets for these races. You can also keep track of local point-to-point racing fixtures and events, which can help you identify opportunities for betting on these races. Ultimately, it is entirely up to the bookmakers what it is they’re willing to accept bets on.

You Can Bet As Much As You Like

Most bookmakers who offer wagering on point-to-point events will be happy to allow you to place as much money on the event as you wish to. Whilst you should keep an eye on the maximum payouts that they’re willing to give you, the actual amount of money that you can wager won’t be limited by most bookies as long as they don’t have too great an exposure by allowing you to place your bets with such high figures. At the end of the day, bookmakers are trying to win money, so if they fancy that they’ll be able to take a lot of yours with limited risk to themselves then they’ll be happy.

As with any form of gambling, it is important to gamble responsibly and within your means. Set limits, manage your bankroll wisely and be aware of the potential risks associated with betting. If you have concerns about gambling or need support, there are resources available, such as gambling helplines and support groups, which can provide assistance. If, however, you are comfortable in what you’re doing and have set yourself a bankroll that you can afford to lose then there is no reason why you shouldn’t do so betting on point-to-point events that you’re attending.

The one thing to be aware of is that most people at any given meeting are likely to be there for fun. This means that most of the bets that people are placing will be for amounts in the region of £2 or £5 or so. Whilst this isn’t exactly 50p bets, it also isn’t hundreds or thousands of pounds. As a result, if that is the sort of amount that you want to bet with then don’t be surprised if some of the attendees at the point-to-point event are interested in what you’re up to or that the bookmakers themselves don’t want to take such huge wagers when they aren’t expecting it.
