Colin Keane’s Early Chance for Juddmonte Success at Royal Ascot 2025

It’s been one of the biggest talking points in flat racing so far, with Colin Keane being named Juddmonte’s new retained jockey. And now, the three-time Irish champion is about to face his first big test in the famous green, pink and white silks with Royal Ascot 2025 on the horizon.

Keane isn’t short on talent or success, but this is new territory. The Juddmonte gig is one of the most prestigious in the game, following in the footsteps of greats like Pat Eddery.

It’s a massive vote of confidence from one of racing’s most iconic owner-breeder operations, with some of the most famous & recognisable horse racing silks in the game. Next week, Keane has the chance to make a serious statement.

From Ireland to the Big Stage

Keane has been a dominant force on the Irish scene for years, mainly in partnership with Ger Lyons. He’s proven, composed, and now armed with Juddmonte’s impressive string of runners.

Juddmonte racing manager Douglas Erskine Crum called the appointment “a natural fit,” with Keane described as a “world-class jockey” and “a superb horseman.” It’s clear they’re not just filling a saddle. Instead, they’re backing Keane to help guide their top horses to major honours.

Looking ahead to next week, Keane’s book of rides is shaping up very nicely.

He’s expected to partner Lead Artist in the Queen Anne Stakes, a horse that comes here on the back of winning the Group One Lockinge Stakes at Newbury last time out.

Then there’s Babouche, winner at Group Three level last time, when Keane was on board. It’s all systems go for the Commonwealth Cup for this one, and it’s an exciting sprint filly.

Kalpana, a Juddmonte homebred, could feature in the Prince Of Wales Stakes, and she’s no stranger to Ascot Group One success, having won the Champion Fillies & Mares race there at the end of last season.

It’s not just quality, it’s depth. Keane has a handful of solid chances, and while none are nailed-on favourites, each one brings potential and a level of interest that has been only heightened by this riding appointment.

If things go right, Keane could walk away from Royal Ascot having firmly stamped his name on the British scene in Juddmonte colours, showcasing the start of what could be a special relationship between them.

Pressure or Opportunity?

There’s no denying the spotlight will be on him. But Keane, instead of speaking about pressure, talks of excitement and opportunity.

Speaking to Sporting Life, he said: “It’s exciting more than anything. Juddmonte have a fantastic team of horses, and to be part of that going into a week like Royal Ascot, it’s what every jockey dreams of.”

It helps that he’s got an established relationship with Ger Lyons, who continues to train some of Juddmonte’s rising stars. That familiarity could prove invaluable as Keane settles into his new role.

A Big Week Ahead

Keane doesn’t need to win five races at Ascot to prove his worth. Just landing one breakthrough moment could be enough to set the tone for the rest of the season.

In many ways, this is the perfect platform for him, with elite horses, massive exposure, and a track where the world is watching.

There will, of course, be some, not just around the world, but in the UK, that don’t fully recognise Keane’s current talent. But in a week’s time, that may change. The stars are lined up for him, just waiting for the headlines to be written.
