The often informative Craven meeting at Newmarket took place this week, and the feature race could have been the most informative of all, with an impressive winner, now bound for the 2000 Guineas.
Field Of Gold, trained by John and Thady Gosden, was much the best in the one-mile contest, winning with ease, and the colt was quickly put forward as the new favourite for the first classic of the season.
It was a course and distance win, adding further to his credentials, and he looks the type to really continue pushing forward with experience.
Recording a winning distance of three and a half lengths over Wimbledon Hawkeye, and looking strongest when at the finish, an impression was definitely made on those watching at the track.
There was a time during the race that the victory looked a little unlikely, with jockey Kieran Shoemark stuck on the rails behind horses and needing a gap.
But that did eventually come, and Shoemark was taken through a gap in great style, with the horse quickening and moving away from the field.
The further they went, the better he looked, and at the end, he was in full control. Had he not needed to wait for the gap, there’s a chance Field Of Gold would have won by even further, who knows what price he would have been then.
New 11/4 Favourite after Craven Win
Bookmakers were very quick to react to Field Of Gold winning on Wednesday. They were offering him at 20/1 to win the 2000 Guineas before the Craven took place, such were the thoughts of his career so far.
There were also plenty of people rightfully thinking that the Craven looked a little subpar this season, without a real standout candidate for the 2000 Guineas as part of the field.
While that may have looked the case before the race, it certainly didn’t afterwards.
Owned by the Juddmonte Farm, who have some of the most famous silks in racing, he’ll be looking to stake his claim to be the next star for their operation.
If you wanted an indication about the strength of the three-year-olds in the Gosden yard this season, then he may not be the main hope of the yard, as John Gosden was quick to point out afterwards.
He could also run Cosmic Year and Jonquil in the race, and Gosden was quick to say that Field Of Gold isn’t clearly his number one hope for the race just yet.
However, having shown that he handles the undulations of Newmarket and gets the trip fine, so of course, they are two big positives going his way.
Twain, trained by Aidan O’Brien, was the favourite for the race before the Craven, We’ve not seen him this year, but now he’s second favourite at 9/2.
The other Gosden runners are both double figures. Cosmic Year has the best price at 10/1, while Jonquil is available at 12/1.
