The Kiwi New Guard Shaping The Next Generation Of Horse Racing

Over the last few years, horse racing in New Zealand has really started to make an impact – especially when you consider the new influx of trainers and jockeys which are having a considerable influence on the sport.

In particular, this season has showcased the New Zealand Premiership and there are a number of jockeys and trainers who have started to put this on the map.

You would be forgiven for thinking that Great Britain in particular is the main horse racing market – and you’d be half right, though there are others around the world, including New Zealand which is starting to make an impression.

The Pilot Jockey Steering Himself Into Contention

In what was a career-defining season, there is one jockey who has somewhat of a unique skillset.

Craig Grylls claimed his first ever New Zealand Jockey’s Premiership title with an impressive 140 winners as well as a personal best of 15 black-type wins while amassing a prize pool of NZ$6 million.

However, he stands out among his competition for other reasons. A licensed pilot, Grylls personally flies to race meetings in his own plane (a Cessna 182), to avoid traffic, making his trips more efficient. It also underlines his commitment and dedication to the sport.

A main reason for his success is his affiliation with the filly Leica Lucy, this proving to be a fruitful combination, having won multiple times aboard her. Such was his remarkable consistency this term, that the TAB bookmakers actually paid out three months early on him to win the title.

Many Others Making An Impact

There are also a number of other jockeys in New Zealand horse racing who are having a positive influence.

Indeed, Elen Nicholas has been the subject of a remarkable comeback story, having broken her leg twice in the last two years and needing a number of operations. She, against the odds, had a superb season in 2024/25, even moving into joint-second at one point in the championship. Even 101RTP New Zealand, which is about statistical analysis, would not have given odds on her having such a good season after the injuries she’s had.

Meanwhile, Matt Cartwright is another who has come back strong, after his move from Australia after opportunities dried up. His impact last season was considerable, with the 22-year-old riding 53 winners which included a Group 1 victory aboard Grail Seeker in the Tarzino Trophy.

Such was the strength of his comeback, he is now  being reunited with major players, including respected Stephen Marsh and Tony Pike.

Can New Zealand Horse Racing Become Popular Globally?

While it is likely that hardcore horse racing fans know about what is happening in the country when it comes to the sport and its increasing profile, most fans are usually concentrated on the British market.

However, based on last season, there are certainly enough interesting stories to catch the attention of the ‘normal’ British punter and even the media. This is certainly one to keep an eye on.
